What Is a Crypto Wallet?
A crypto wallet is how you interact with assets on a blockchain — but it does not work quite like the wallet in your pocket.
About a 2–3 minute readWhat does a wallet actually do?
A crypto wallet helps you view and control blockchain assets associated with your address. It can show balances, receive assets and sign transactions.
The important distinction is that the coins and tokens are recorded on the blockchain. The wallet gives you the ability to control them.
Your public address
A wallet has a public address that can be shared when you want to receive crypto. Think of it a little like an account number — other people can use it to send assets to you.
The secret part
Wallets use private credentials to authorise transactions. Many wallets provide a seed phrase or recovery phrase that can restore access.
If someone gets that secret, they may be able to control the wallet. If you lose it and have no other recovery method, you may lose access yourself.
Hot wallets and cold wallets
A hot wallet is connected to an internet-enabled device and is convenient for regular use. A cold wallet keeps signing credentials more isolated and is often used for longer-term storage.
Neither removes the need to check what you are signing.
The lesson that matters most
Wallet security is one of the first things worth learning properly.
Creating Griff Coin made the difference between a public wallet address and private wallet credentials very real. The public address is meant to be seen. The private key or seed phrase is not.
